Dr. Cumbo has Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Colorado-Boulder with a specialization in learning theory, curriculum development, and evaluation. She was the Director of Service-Learning at the Colorado Department of Education from 1999-2004 and has been a national education consultant for such organizations at the Corporation for National and Community Service.
Currently, Dr. Cumbo is the Director of Programs for the international PeaceJam Foundation – a non-profit organization that connects youth with Nobel Peace Laureates – whose mission is to create young leaders committed to positive change in the world, their communities, and themselves. PeaceJam is the only organization in the world which has so many Nobel Peace Laureates working together long-term for a common cause – our youth.
These leading Nobel Peace Laureates include The Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. These Laureates work personally with youth to pass on their spirit, skills and wisdom at annual PeaceJam conferences. Solano county youth will have the opportunity to attend two conferences next year: one at Oregon State University in April 08, and the other in Costa Rica in September 08.
PeaceJam Foundation was founded in 1996 in Denver, Colorado to address the youth crisis around the world.
There are more than 2 billion teenagers alive on the planet today. Nearly half of the world’s population is under the age of 20. This is a generation in crisis with feelings of hopelessness and powerlessness.
Hate seems to be escalating. Somewhere in America…every hour someone commits a hate crime…every day at least eight blacks, four gays or lesbians, two Jews, two whites and one Latino become hate crime victims…hate crimes against Asian Americans is the fastest growing category…every week a cross is burned. Southern Poverty Law Center
Our world’s religions are unable to stop this trend and in fact, are often fuel for this hatred and violence. Witness the post 9.11 hate crimes against hundreds of Arab Americans, Muslim Americans and Sikh Americans. All around the world people continue to kill each other in the name of their particular religion.
These feeling are universal and transcend racial, political and economic boundaries
Finally, there is a need for true heroes because most youth do not identify themselves as people who can generate greatness in the world.
Dr. Cumbo has worked to grow PeaceJam Foundation and has conducted workshops and keynote addresses around the country related to youth leadership, program evaluation, effective educational practices, and building PeaceJam affiliate systems.
How PeaceJam Foundation came into being: Ivan Suvanjieff, a local musician in Denver, conceived of the idea for PeaceJam in the summer of 1994 when he was talking to some gang members from his neighborhood in North Denver, CO. He discovered that they not only knew who Archbishop Desmond Tutu was, they also appreciated his nonviolent efforts towards social change in South Africa.
Suvanjief understood that not much impressed these gang members and saw the significance and power possible by connecting disaffected youth with Nobel Peace Laureates as new role models for positive change.
His colleague, Dawn Engle, had meet The Dalai Lama during her years of working for the U.S. Congress. Eengle and Suvanjieff were granted an audience in India with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who liked the idea. Then Archbishop Desmond Tutu came on board and PeaceJam Foundation was established.
Since then, almost 500,000 youth worldwide have participated in PeaceJam programs. Each student has an average of 45.5 contact hours with their PeaceJam teacher, mentor, community leader or PeaceJam staff. PeaceJam works! 93% of those who participate in PeaceJam believe that “one person can make a difference,” and 97% feel that because of their experience in PeaceJam, they will be peacemakers for the rest of their lives.
Through the PeaceJam program, more than 310,000 new service projects have been developed and implemented around the world. And thousands of new volunteer opportunities for youth and adults alike have been created worldwide.
PeaceJam Foundation has five innovative curricular programs for youth from kindergarten through college.
PeaceJam Juniors is a standards-based curriculum for ages 5-11 that explores the childhood stories of 12 Nobel Peace Laureates and the character traits they embody. Students study the personal experiences of these amazing world leaders and then engage in service-learning projects that address needs in their local community. PeaceJam Leaders is a new standards-based curriculum for young people between the ages of 11-14. It explores the adolescent stories of 12 Nobel Peace Laureates and the strategies they used to overcome problems in their lives and their communities. Through this age-appropriate curriculum, youth explore their own identities and re-examine the choices they make including their role models and peer groups to which they belong Youth also develop leadership and problem-solving skills while engaging in service-learning activities that address local needs.
PeaceJam Ambassadors program is designed for youth ages 14-19 and explores issues related to peace, violence, social justice and oppression. Youth study the lives and work of 12 Nobel Peace Laureates and the strategies they use to address pressing global issues. This program also includes an annual PeaceJam Youth Conference where youth spend a weekend with a Nobel Peace Laureate giving them an unprecedented opportunity to share with, learn from, and be inspired by a world leader for peace.
